Story:

Mittal’s Orissa project very much on track: Patnaik

A day after steel billionaire L.N. Mittal expressed unhappiness over the delay in his Indian projects, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Friday said Mittal’s project in the state was very much on track.

‘Mittal’s project is very much on the track. The project will certainly come up in the state. We have not received any negative message from the Mittals,’ he said.

The state government has also clarified that the proposed Mittal project would not be shifting to Karnataka.

‘The project is very much here in the state. The country head of the company has given us in writing that the project is coming,’ state Industry Minister Raghunath Mohanty said.

He also clarified that there is no delay in the project and the state government is extending all cooperation for it.

ArcelorMittal has proposed to set up 12 million tonnes per annum steel plant in the state’s backward Keonjhar district.

No significant improvement in Basu’s condition (Roundup)

The condition of Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu, on partial ventilator support in a hospital here with pneumonia, did not show any significant improvement Friday as the attending doctors held a video conference with specialists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered to arrange for expert doctors for Basu’s treatment, the medical board constituted by the AMRI Hospital for treating the critically ill 95-year-old leader opted for a video conference with AIIMS specialists.

“There is no significant improvement in Basu’s condition,” said the hospital medical bulletin in the afternoon and the evening. “Last (Thursday) night, there was an episode of irregularity of heartbeat. This was treated adequately,” said the day’s first bulletin, issued around 12.45 p.m.

The AMRI doctors “conveyed in detail Basu’s condition, including his past medical history, findings, investigation done and treatment provided to him to so far” to the specialists in AIIMS during the video conference.

“The doctors of the two hospitals agreed that the main hindrance to Basu’s fast recovery was his advanced age,” the bulletin said.

“The special board of AIIMS conveyed its complete satisfaction with the mode of treatment and wished him speedy recovery,” the bulletin added.

A steady stream of visitors continued to pour into the hospital to see the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former West Bengal chief minister, who was admitted to the Salt Lake hospital Jan 1 following chest congestion and infection and shifted to the ICCU Jan 2.

Former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda, who called on Basu Friday morning, said the 95-year-old leader greeted him by lifting his hand partially. “A doctor tried to wake him up. He lifted his hand up to a point. He did not open his eyes,” Deve Gowda said.

“That shows his brain function is very good. Of course, he is on ventilator, but as things stand his condition is a little improved,” he added.

Earlier, AMRI medical superintendent Debasish Sharma told IANS that the veteran communist was “slightly better”.

He was being fed liquid food.

The medical board put Basu on ventilator support due to acute respiratory problems early Jan 6.

Basu holds the record for the longest 23-year stint as chief minister from June 1977 until November 2000. He stepped down voluntarily on health grounds.

Patkar blames Chhattisgarh government for egg-tomato attack

Two days after dozens of tribal people threw eggs and tomatoes at social activist Medha Patkar and several of her associates in Maoist violence-hit Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh, she Friday alleged it was a ’state government-sponsored protest’.

‘It was all a government-sponsored protest in Dantewada in police presence. Those who threw eggs and tomatoes were brought from a relief camp by the government,’ Patkar told a press conference here.

Looking furious over the treatment she received Wednesday in Dantewada, about 380 km south of capital Raipur, Patkar said she wanted Thursday to meet Kopa Kunjam, a jailed Maoist sympathizer being kept in Dantewda jail but authorities allegedly forced Kunjam to refuse to meet her.

Trouble began in Dantewada when Patkar, Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey and a few activists reached the town to join the ongoing campaign of rights activists against alleged atrocities being committed by security forces on local tribes.

A large number of tribals, under the banner of ‘Ma Danteshwari Swabhiman Manch’ chased the activists accusing them of supporting Maoist sympathisers, who are trying to stall the anti-Maoist operations in the restive Bastar region.

Even at Raipur Press club when she was addressing mediamen, several kids orphaned in Maoist violence in the restive Bastar region staged protest and raised slogans against Patkar and her associates for their alleged support to Maoist sympathisers in name of human rights protection.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister seeks consensus on poll reforms

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Sing Chouhan Friday sought cooperation from all political parties and social groups in reaching consensus of electoral reforms, such as fixed terms for legislatures and simultaneous elections to parliament and state assemblies.

In separate letters to legislators, members of parliament, national leaders of various political parties and social activists, Chouhan suggested that elctions to both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies be held simultaneously and the elected houses be run mandatorily for full term of five years.

He has also laid stress on holding direct election of the prime minister by the electorate and state funding for election expenses of all recognised political parties.

He noted that till 1970 both thwe Lok Sabha and state assembly elections were held simultaneously and elected governments completed their respective terms.

‘But later Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections were held separately and sometimes situation of mid-term polls also arose which was a matter of concern,’ he said.

He contended this led to ‘extraordinary expenses which double up when Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections are held separately while on the other hand, a parallel black money economy is also on the rise due to use of money and muscle power in the elections’.

‘Moreover, the code of conduct imposed time and again due to various elections affects public welfare programmes as well as development. Also, fractured mandates have given rise to compromise chief ministers and sometimes even prime ministers, due to which the country had to face ill-effects.’

He urged the legislators and MPS to evolve a consensus on the issue in their respective parties and appealed to them to add their own suggestions for electoral reforms.

In his letter to social activists, Chouhan urged them to evolve a consensus over electoral reforms in their respective areas of influence.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday told overseas Indians that India will quickly return to a sustained high growth path of 9-10 percent and sought new avenues of partnership with the diaspora.

He was speaking at the first meeting
of the Prime Minister’s Global Advisory Council of 16 eminent overseas Indians who between them represent different disciplines from across the world.

Manmohan Singh will formally inaugurate the the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2010, the annual conclave of the Indian diaspora, Friday.

“Prime Minister observed that he was confident that India would quickly return to sustained high growth path of 9-10 percent,” a statement from the prime minister’s office said.

The members of the advisory council told the prime minister that India and its overseas community can and should build “a strong, strategic and mutually beneficial partnership”.

The prime minister stressed that he looked forward to sustained dialogue with the members of the council including through smaller steering groups focusing on specific areas, in opening new avenues of cooperation between the overseas Indian community and India.

The advisory council headed by Manmohan Singh comprises External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, T.K.A Nair and Overseas Indian Affairs Secretary A. Didar Singh.

Suicide attack kills 10 in Afghanistan

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a busy market in eastern Afghanistan Thursday, killing himself and nine other people and injuring 27 more, a government spokesman said.

The bomber targeted Baser Ahmad, a commander in the Afghan Campaign Forces that are allied with international troops in Gardez, the capital city of the south-eastern province of Paktia, Rohullah Samoon, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said.

“The bombing killed Baser Ahmad, two of his bodyguards, a border police officer and five civilians,” Samoon told DPA.

One police officer and 26 civilians were injured in the blast, he said.

NATO in Kabul confirmed the attack in a statement and said its forces were helping evacuate the injured people to the provincial hospital.

“The insurgents have again proven that they are the enemy of the Afghan people,” Italian General Luigi Scollo said in the statement. “We strongly condemn these indiscriminate, cowardly acts of murder.”

Kidnapped Delhi schoolboy found murdered

Barely a little more than a week after he was kidnapped, a Class 11 student of DPS Gurgaon was murdered. The incident came to light on Wednesday.

The boy was kidnapped and then brutally murdered by five men including an MBA student.

For nearly a month the grieving family of the victim, Azharuddin, living in Marutikunj area of Gurgaon, was trying to rescue their kidnapped son unaware of the fact that the 17-year-old had been murdered on December 21, the very day he was abducted.

Victim’s father Mohammed Akhtar said, “Maine use bahar bheja tha education loan laane ke liye tabhi unhone use pakad liya. Unhone 50 lakh ki rakam leke Jhansi bhi bulaya tha. Main wahan pahuncha to adh gaya ki pehle mere bacche se meri baat karao (He was out to arrange for education loan as per my asking and that is when they (abductors) kidnapped him. They asked me for a Rs 50 lakh ransom and called me to Jhansi, I reached there and wanted to see my son first).”

However, Akhtar had to return empty-handed. The Gurgaon police finally traced the blackmail calls to five young men, who were arrested from Marutikunj and Anand Vihar in Delhi.

DCP, Crime A K Dhawan said, “They were known to each other that’s why he accepted their offer of gong to Palwal. From there they took him to Itah where they murdered him on December 21.”

One of the abductors is an MBA student, while another holds a BSc degree from Agra University. A budding photographer and two drivers completed the group, who wanted to make a quick buck but strangulated Azharuddin for fear that he would reveal their identity.

The accused have now been taken into police remand till January 2 and will then be produced in court but with an alarming rise in the number of such incidents in the NCR, the need of the hour is not just arrest but a harsh punishment to act as a deterrent to such heinous crimes.

Iraq to connect to India, Gulf on fibre optic network

Iraq Thursday signed a $445-million deal with the telecommunications company Gulf Bridge International to link the country to the Gulf and India via a high-speed fibre optic cable.

Announcing the deal at a press conference in Qatar, Iraqi Minister of Telecommunications Faruq Abdel-Qadir said the modernisation of Iraq’s communications infrastructure was at least as important to the country as the contracts Iraq recently signed with international companies to develop its oil fields.

The cable would further improve data links between Europe and Asia, Abdel-Qadir said, adding that at least five additional undersea cables would be needed to meet future bandwidth demands.

Abdel-Qadir told DPA that the Iraqi government was ‘not satisfied’ with the service offered by the three mobile phone companies operating in the country.

Iraq Tuesday announced it was in talks with companies for a fourth mobile phone licence.

The cabinet in July approved plans to set up a fourth mobile phone network. AsiaCell, Kuwait’s Zain Group, and Korek Telecom now hold Iraq’s three mobile phone licences.

In May, the Iraqi government fined the companies for poor service. Zain was ordered to pay $18.6 million, Korek $1.2 million and AsiaCell $1.1 million.

Ahmed Mekky, CEO of Gulf Bridge International, told DPA that the company is now studying the possibility extending the cable to Syria.

‘The project will represent a leap in connecting the Gulf region with the world,’ he said. ‘This is the project’s main goal.’

Seven more swine flu deaths in Delhi

Seven more people have died of swine flu in the national capital, taking the toll due to the deadly H1N1 virus in the city to 83, health officials said Thursday.

The confirmation of the deaths came Thursday. Details are not known yet.

“There were also 15 new infections in the city. Of these, five were children,” a health official told IANS.

The capital has so far reported 9,523 cases, including 5,322 children.

90 percent polling for Uttar Pradesh upper house

Polling for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council to elect 36 representatives from 35 local authority constituencies passed off Thursday with around 90 percent of the electorate exercising their franchise, an official said.

‘While we are still to ascertain the exact polling percentage, we have learnt that it would be somewhere near 90 percent. The exact polling percentage will be clear only late night,’ the state’s Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha told IANS.

‘The polling process across the state remained totally peaceful,’ he added.

The polling that started at 8 a.m. at 923 polling centres continued till 4 p.m. Instead of electronic voting machines, ballot papers were used.

As many as 193 candidates are in the fray to fill the 36 seats from 35 local authority constituencies and their fate would be decided by an electorate of over 133,000. A maximum of eight candidates are in the fray for the Allahabad seat while Badaun, Hardoi, Azamgarh, Ballia, Varanasi and Jhansi constituencies have three candidates each.

Among the main political parties, the state’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting all the 36 seats while the main opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) is contesting 32, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 23 and the Congress 21.

The Election Commission had appointed 35 IAS officers belonging to the Uttar Pradesh cadre as its observers to oversee the election. Thirty five special observers have also been appointed for the constituencies at the request of the political parties and candidates.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal said 53 companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) were deployed to ensure free and fair elections. He said 22 companies of PAC have been kept in reserve.

The votes will be counted on Saturday.

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) has 100 members. Of these, 36 are elected by the local bodies. Other members are elected by graduates, teachers and legislators of the lower house, while some are nominated.

Presently, in the 100-seat council, the main opposition SP has 35 members while the ruling BSP has 22. Among other mainstream political parties, BJP has 16 members, the Congress three and the Rashtriya Lok Dal five.

Struggling days difficult yet memorable: Shahid

Shahid Kapoor feels his struggling days were difficult — from renting a number of houses to spending a night in a second hand Maruti 800 to giving 100s of auditions and getting rejected — yet memorable.

‘All these things are a memory. I am very happy and proud of the fact that God has been so kind to me and given me so much. I am glad that I was able to get through all those difficulties in my life,’ said Shahid, who spent a whole night sitting on the roof and bonnet of a car along with his ‘Chance Pe Dance‘ co-star Genelia D’Souza at the Kamalistan Studios here, promoting their movie that releases Jan 15.

At around midnight Wednesday, the duo arrived near the car in T-shirts and track pants.

Vada pao (bun) and tea vendors were present along with ‘khatiyas‘ (string cot) nearby for the audience.

In the film, Shahid plays a struggler who comes to Mumbai to make it big in the movies.

Sources said the activity, which continued till 7 a.m Thursday, was planned as it resembles the lives of those who come to Mumbai to try their luck and also because a scene in the movie depicts it.

Citing a real-life incident when he spent a night in a car during his struggling days, though he had his house and well-settled family in Mumbai, the actor told ‘We always lived in a rented flat and we had to shift from one flat to the other and my family was not in town. Due to some reason we had to leave the flat a day before and I had to spent the night in the car.’

“This is the biggest thing we have done. We have shot in Dubai, San Jose, San Francisco, London, Mumbai, New Delhi, we had been following Shah Rukh wherever he went since March 2009 and he gave us complete access,” Johri told the media, without divulging the investment made for it.

The series will have eight repeats in a week, justifying the fan following that Shah Rukh commands across the globe.

The CBI filed a second chargesheet against the accused in the multi-crore accounting fraud in Satyam Computer, including its founder chairman B Ramalinga Raju and Mahindra Satyam’s internal audit head V S Prabhakar Gupta.

With this, as far as the probe into the accounting scam is concerned, the investigation is completed, CBI DIG V V Laxminarayana told reporters.

The supplementary chargesheet has arraigned Gupta, who was Global Head Internal Audit of Satyam Computers and held the same position in Mahindra Satyam.

Gupta was arrested last Saturday for his role in the accounting scam in connivance with Ramalinga Raju.

The chargesheet was filed in the XIV Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court-which is the designated CBI court.

It contains 200 pages, citing 1,549 additional documents and statements of 301 additional witnesses and nine material objects. The entire documentation, which runs into 55,000 pages had to be brought in three trunk-loads to be produced before the magistrate.

As per the chargesheet the accused have created fake customers and generated fake invoices in order to inflate revenues to the tune of Rs 430 crore.

The accused have also forged the Board Resolutions and unauthorisedly obtained loans and advances to the tune of Rs 1,220 crore in the name of Satyam Computer.

Vishnuvardhan

Tamil movie icon Rajnikanth visited the house of late Kannada film superstar Vishnuvardhan, who died recently following a heart attack, to console his family members.
Rajnikanth spent close to an hour at Vishnuvardhan’s house Wednesday night. He was accompanied by his close friend, actor and former parliamentarian Ambareesh, well-known Kannada film producers Rockline Venkatesh and K. Manju. He told the family about some of the moments he shared with the late actor.

Later, talking to reporters outside the residence, Rajnikanth described Vishnuvardhan as the most sincere actor and a great human being. “He was a role model and had abundant knowledge about spiritual things. He was always helpful. I was in fact encouraged by Vishnu in my younger days.

“My resolve to become an actor was strengthened after I saw Vishnu’s film Nagarahavu

directed by Puttanna Kanagal. I cherish memories of meeting him many a times and sharing our insights about spirituality,” said Rajnikanth.

Recently, both Vishnuvardhan and Rajnikanth attended a meeting of artistes who had worked in South Indian films during the seventies, organised by Malayalam actress Lizy Priyadarshan, wife of well-known film director Priyadarshan and popular Tamil film and television actress Radhika Sarathkumar. Other artistes, including Karthick, Revathy, Suhasini Manirathnam, Shobhana and Suman, also participated in the meet.

Rajnikanth had acted with Vishnuvardhan in two Kannada films when the late actor was already a big star. The two films — “Sahodarara Sawal” and “Galate Samsara” — were hugely successful.

Vishnuvardhan had worked with Rajnikanth in Tamil films like “Vidudalai” (a remake of Feroze Khan’s Bollywood hit “Qurbaani”) which was shot in London and “Sri Raghavendra” (Rajnikanth’s 100th film).

Vishnuvardhan died Dec 30, ending an era in the Kannada film industry.
