Directorate of Punjab State Lotteries came into existence in the 1968 as a wing of the Finance Department with a view to curbing illegal activities like satta, matka etc and to organize lotteries, at regular intervals, so as to mobilize resources for the State Exchequer.

Draws of the weekly lotteries, as also the monthy lottery, are conducted in a transparent manner in the draw hall at Ludhiana.
Presently 336 Weekly Lotteries are being organized and 48 draws are being conducted daily. The MRP of tickets is Rs.1.10 / 2.20 / 4.40 / 5.50 per ticket depending on scheme. The prize disbursement to the public is 91.3%. These weekly lotteries are being sold on all sold basis through Sole Selling Agents who are appointed by inviting tenders.
